The featured wine this week is a great Italian wine from the dynamic Caldora winery, run by a renowned winemaker Mario Ercolino and Valentino Sciotti. Together, they're using custom technology and "avant-garde" vineyard management to make some fantastic wines.
The 2009 Caldora Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a wine who's name may not look familiar, but the flavor and value are a fantastic combination. A grape native to Itally, Montepulciano makes soft, deeply colored wines with black fruit and spice notes.
This particular bottling is ruby red with garnet reflections, intense and persistent fragrance. Aromas of red fruit and prunes with vanilla nuances. Medium-to-full bodied with a good balance, this wine is ready to drink. Great as a starter or paired with salami, savory first courses, meat in general and medium aged cheeses. According to one reviewer, “it is a tasty, easy to drink, in your face red wine that offers great all year round drinking pleasure.”
For Mother's Day, we'll be featuring several wines geared towards all the fantastic Moms in your life, or any special woman you want to treat to a nice celebration. Come by Esquire Liquors on Friday, May 11 from 5-8 PM to try the four wines featured in this post!
First, we will have the brand new Skinnygirl line of wines! After her success with the great Skinnygirl cocktails, Bethenney Frankel is now offering some great wines with the same approachable, but health-conscious, theme in mind.
Frankel says: "I’m not a wine connoisseur, but I do love a refreshing, great tasting glass of wine and that’s what I’ve created. There is a selection of red, white and rosé varietals, made from California grown grapes, and each serving is only 100 calories—15% lower than most other brands." (www.bethenny.com)
The Skinnygirl California Red Blend has aromatics that suggest a warm berry compote with cherry and chocolate notes. Flavors of blackberry, plum, raspberry, and cocoa blend with more subtle caramel notes. The mild tannins balance with a smooth, supple mouthfeel for an easy to drink red wine.
Skinnygirl California White Blend is a juicy wine that finds a balance between fruity and floral, pairing white blossom aromas with peach, guava, honey, and lemon flavors. The off-dry style brings out the great fruit notes like apricot and tangerine that linger and finish with a refreshing acidity.
Skinnygirl California Rose bursts with aromatics of cherry, pomegranate, and ripe citrus fruits. These fruit flavors dominate the palate, showing watermelon and pomegranate as well as a refreshing strawberry lemonade character. The palate is soft with a touch of lively acidity.
Finally, we'll have a special sparkling wine for those special Mother's Day celebrations that call for a bottle of bubbly. Santero Moscato Rose (Italy) is perfect for those who like sweet wine, but nothing too heavy or syrupy. The delicate bubbles bring a great lightness to the intense strawberry and raspberry notes in the wine. This would pair really well with fruits and desserts and the decorative bottle makes for a great gift!
